Meet the Team
We are a team of five uci undergraduates working in association with r&d directors of Edwards lifesciences
PULMAtech
PULMAtech is a team of highly talented and knowledgeable biomedical engineering senior students at the University of California, Irvine. The team is highly devoted to improving patient outcomes and potentially saving lives. To this end, the team wants to create a device to ensure that clinicians have the ability to TAVR alternative access patients as safely and effectively as possible. Each team member also has a strong sense of teamwork and pride in their knowledge and work, meaning that our team will work efficiently and collaboratively in order to perfect this potentially life saving device.

Francis Ung - Project Lead
Francis Ung is the project leader. He has taken various courses as a BME student on engineering design, CAD, lab control programs, and material sciences. He has spent time creating devices such as exoskeletons and braces for limbs in the hopes of helping people using my experience with robotics and tinkering. Francis strives to utilize and apply his experience in design, manufacturing, and engineering in real-world industry.
Lance Losorelli - Design Lead
Lance Losorelli is the team lead designer responsible for guiding product development. He enjoys designing and making devices with biomedical applications. His experience in CAD, LabView, and MATLAB has been important in designing, prototyping and testing our TAVR device. Lance plans on applying all of my technical, theoretical, analytical, and communications skills and knowledge into designing a product for Edwards Lifesciences to address issues with Transcatheter aortic valve replacement in alternative access (non-transfemoral) cases.
Gabriella Anderson - Data Manager
Gabriella Anderson is the team’s data manager, responsible for data collection and analysis. She enjoys organizing documentation and information while creating more comprehensive modes of communication. With her excellent people skills, Gabriella facilitates effective collaboration on tasks and discussion of new ideas between team members. Her interests are in coding websites, researching new information, and connecting with others through social media networking.
Robert Pel - Coordinator
Robert Pel is the team’s coordinator and documentation manager responsible for setting up meetings, taking discussion notes, and ensuring that the team meets all of the necessary requirements. He communicates with the team’s mentor at Edwards to ensure the team has the necessary resources and a solid action plan for each week. Additionally, as he is well experienced in CAD, he has assisted greatly in the design and modeling of the team’s secondary solution plan. Modifying and iterating on the design to make the sheath support omnilink a valid second option along with the duolink.
Joshua Mantock - Quality Control
Joshua is the team’s Quality Control Engineer, responsible for ensuring that all designs, prototypes, and devices are produced with the highest quality, while analyzing all potential failure modes of the designs. His role encompasses market advising and data analysis of the product. Joshua’s main responsibility is to determine the product’s market feasibility and help with the product development process.
Edwards Lifesciences Mentor
This project is in association with Edwards Lifesciences, the market leader for TAVR devices in the US, and our mentor is Ilan Tamir.
Ilan Tamir - Director of Research and Development
Ilan is one of the mentors of our team. He is a director of Research and Development at Edwards Lifesciences. Ilan has been a pivotal part of our team's success, providing us with real-world industry knowledge and design advising. As a mentor he has provided materials and feedback on a weekly basis, while also allowing us to meet at the Edwards facility on a bi-weekly schedule. Going above and beyond to bring in guests, who are experts in their fields, for us to learn from and guide us along our journey for this project.
